About us

Our population is growing rapidly. By 2025 it is estimated to reach at least 376,000 from 242,000 (2010 census).

It is the most ethnically diverse local authority in England and Wales with high rates of mobility of 19.4% population turnover. 25th most deprived LA in England (was 2nd in 2010); 4th in London. It has the highest birth rate and the highest proportion of young people in the country – 24% of the population.

We were the host borough to the 2012 London Olympics and 2017 World Athletics Championships.

We're investing in delivering a national vision for excellent children’s social care now and in the future. We are striving to bring the best people into the profession by actively engaging with social work training to ensure students and trainees are acquiring the right knowledge and skills to do the job.

Newly Qualified Social Workers and the ASYE

We ensure all Newly Qualified Social Workers (NQSW) are fully supported in their first year of practice by providing the following opportunities:

  • Shadowing peers and other professionals
  • Co-working with more experienced professionals
  • Peer group mentoring and guided reading from an external support supervisor
  • Familiarisation with the local community
  • Discussions with more experienced colleagues
  • 10% of the time to be ring fenced for training and development activity
  • Access to additional funds for support of own professional development
  • Supervision weekly for the first six weeks
  • Supervision sessions fortnightly for next six months
  • 10% reduction in caseloads
  • Training and development activities including external seminars and conferences
  • Training and support for assessors
  • A salary increase of two increments on successful completion of the programme.

The North East London Social Work Teaching Partnership

The North East London Social Work Teaching Partnership

The North East London Social Work Teaching Partnership (NELTP) comprises the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham, Redbridge and Tower Hamlets together with the University of East London and London Metropolitan University.
The NELTP has been funded by the Department for Education from 2018 to 2020 to improve standards in the Social Work workforce in our region.
NELTP works with promoting and developing exceptional social work practice.
The Teaching partnership works collaboratively to support the social work profession and to be at the forefront of the latest developments taking place locally.
